Satan's Tactics Exposed

Satan’s Tactics Exposed

If you know what tactics are being used against you, you will have more power.
Wilcox said that everything in the Book of Mormon can and should be applied spiritually

3 Nephi 3 – There are 2 sections to the chapter
1) A description of Satan’s tactics
2) What you can do to fight them

3:2 Flattery
Sarcasm
Doubts ( Everyone has them, its just how you deal with them that counts)
Skepticism
Fear, Intimidation, Threats ( Destroyer)
Lying (Satan is Father of Lies)
Accusing (Satan makes us think that we are accusing ourselves, when it is in fact him)
Hypocrisy
Persuading us to Yield
3:7 A or B tactic—“ Yield or Be Destroyed” (in fact there are options)
Entrapment
False Testimony – Reversal of Values
Justifying and Transfering Blame

(Side note--I think there are more tactics than this, just these were covered in the chapter. Satan has great tactics, terrible long term strategy. He has power to bruise heels(tactics), but God's power can crush/kill him-WIN (Strategy)

So.. How do we Defend against it?

v.12
1)Don’t be Afraid
2)Don’t Listen
3) Pray for Strength (It’s never too late to pray for an escape from temptation or forgiveness, but always better to pray to avoid temptation or strength to fight it)

v.13
4) Gather ( The work of the Latter Days is Gathering)
5) Build Fortification
6) Place Guards to Watch
(Melchizedek and Aaronic Priesthood duty is to Watch over Church always ( D&C 20)
7) Strengthen Weak Areas – Repent ( Satan will attack where you were weak before

v.15
8) Exert ourselves in our might to follow chief Captains ( prophets, apostles)

v.24
9) Don’t Fight Satan in his territory ( fight him on your turf in the center)

v.25
10) Arm ourselves after Instruction of our leaders (Paul-Put on the WHOLE armor of God)

4:15
Great Tragedy of Nephites is that they didn’t hold on 4 years to Jesus Christ's prophesied Coming.

They went up and down between righteousness & wickedness in 7-10 year periods

Major events helped humble their civilization and towards righteousness
Famine
Day of Light
Gadianton Threat

In our lives, sometimes we just need to HOLD on.
Boyd K. Packer has been known to say “When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on”

Helaman - Relevant Warning for our day

The entire Book of Mormon was “compiled” for our day. The book of Helaman is especially relevant for our day—even prophetic. We should read the Book of Mormon, especially Helaman anticipating relevance. (In book of Mormon it is not hard to discover)

Are we prepared for Large Dangers and miss the small dangers in our lives?

“When you are full in the sail and caught in the gale, below of the dangers below”
Book of Alma shows an increasing Lamanite threat culminating at the end Alma
Helaman shows the threats that come from within

The Lamanite Danger
External
Recognizable
Dominant
Danger can end extremely quickly (i.e. cold war)

The Nephite Danger
Subtle, upward, rising threats
Internal (Organized Crime 80s,90s)
(or unrecognized external) Radical Islam 00’s
Can grow extremely rapidly

Mormon shows how big of a threat Gadianton Robbers are. (Helaman 2:13,14)

4 Headed Serpent
1) Corruption of Law
2) Secret Combinations
a. The word in our day for Combinations is ORGANIZATIONS.
b. Combine or come together in secret to do organized, combined evil
3) Materialism ( This is the BIG head)
4) Spiritual Dwindling
a. Values of nation are lost

Wilcox says currently our nation has all 4
Iniquity in the world is rising and the church is a few steps behind it

1) Corruption of Law

The corruptness of the law actually started back in Alma 10:17 and Alma 10:26,27
(Materialism obscures lawyers, which obscures laws and breeds secret, which erodes values

Wilcox read from “A World Split Apart” Commencement Address Delivered At Harvard University June 8, 1978 By Alexander I. Solzhenitsyn. He also recommended

Also mentioned an the commencement address --"Exhausted West" by the same author as worthy of review. ( available online)

“Western society has chosen for itself the organization best suited to its purposes and one I might call legalistic. The limits of human rights and rightness are determined by a system of laws; such limits are very broad. People in the West have acquired considerable skill in using, interpreting, and manipulating law (though laws tend to be too complicated for an average person to understand without the help of an expert). Every conflict is solved according to the letter of the law and this is considered to be the ultimate solution.”

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/776305/posts

“But should I be asked, instead, whether I would propose the West, such as it is today, as a model to my country, I would frankly have to answer negatively. No, I could not recommend your society as an ideal for the transformation of ours. Through deep suffering, people in our own country have now achieved a spiritual development of such intensity that the Western system in its present state of spiritual exhaustion does not look attractive”

Many things are legal, but are not ethical.

The righteousness of the Nephites and Lamanites changed over
v.34 dwindle in unbelief
grow in wickedness
v.35 spirit withdrew
support Gadianton Robbers

v.36 ease and willingness to believe
v.34 grow exceedingly in knowledge
v.36 pour out spirit
v.37 lamanites hunt robbers

2) Secret Combinations

3 Satanic lessons as learned by Cain
1) How to Murder for Money, How to Exchange Life for profit.
Cain killed abel for flocks.
Pornography, Drugs, Alcohol are a slow death for money
Slavery, especially child slavery
Robber Barons
2) How to get away with it. You can sin and not pay.
3) You don’t need to be your brothers keepersEvery man prospers according to their own geniusLaw of the jungle ( dog eat dog world)No responsibility to brothers, sisters, the world

Gospel is the opposite
1) God exchanged his Life for the Spiritual Wealth of all of us
2) Truth will make you free. Mercy
3) Love Neighbor as Self

3) Materialism

Helaman 3 Pride
v. little pride
v.24 great prosperity
v.33 pride into people, in the church
v.34 lifted up in pride
v.36 exceedingly great pride
v.36 grow upon them day to day
Hel 4:12 pride and riches
Hel 6:17 Set hearts on riches
Seek gain to be lifted up
Began murdering, robbing, plundering for gain
Hel 6:35 Heart hardened
Spirit withdrew
v.33 Pride of heart
v36 Great pride of heart

Book of Mormon never gives problems without solutions, lessons.
Hel 6:20-30

Satan is always trying to get hold of our hearts and make it cold and kill it.
An interesting study is the study of the word Heart in the book of Helaman

We need to take hold of something in our hands to protect our hearts
i.e. Iron Rod,Sword,Compass,Shield,Lamp

Wilcox shared that Boyd K. Packer is one of greatest examples of yielding heart. He gave 100%-- everything I have and ever will be.

Yielding hearts bring sanctification

4) Spiritual Values

Wilcox thanked the class for feeling that truth is pulled out of him every week, rather than having to push it out. More on spiritual values next week

Spiritual Warfare

Alma 46 – Title of Liberty
Paraphrasing Wilcox, "Learning how others fought their war, can help us in our fight"

We are all in a Personal Spiritual War.
Some point in your life you need to take a stand
We need to develop our own value statements & wave our own Title of Liberty
We need to find balance between waving your title of liberty & not "casting pearls before swine "

v.7 They lived in an exceedingly dangerous time
v.12 When you wave your flag you don’t know if people will follow
v.21 people came running

Prophets have legacies ( something that makes their tenure unique)
Joseph Smith – Doctrine, Church Organization
Brigham Young – An Enduring Church
Gordon B Hinckley -- (Wilcox suggested 3 components to what Hinckleys legacy will be
Small Temples
Perpetual Education Fund
Proclamation to the World - A Title of Liberty for our Day

Alma 47 - It's Safer on the Hill

Shared story of when he was a kid being trapped in a Pen with a Bull.
Lucifer is like a Bull -- Patient, yet can becomes fast, furious, powerful in a few seconds
On your horse you are safe -- On top of the horse represents Standards, Commandments, Counsel

The Hill Antipus – A defendable hill that Lamanite "Conscientious Objectors" retreated to to be safe from fighting a war they didn't believe in.

v.6 they are committed to not fight

Satan would have you subject to his will. (They were fixed, determined, resolute not to give in)

Satan’s tactics
v.10 “Come down just a little” the trick was to make them feel they were in control
v.13 just a little more, a little more ( here a little, there a little)
v.14 Eventually they came all the way down and blended in with the "world"
v.18 Lehonti ( the leader) Eventually died because of Poison administered to him in degrees

The sad thing is that Lehonti died thinking he was in control. (A fatal fallacy)
Wilcox shared a story of a UVSC institute teacher friend who gave a speech at his mothers funeral and thanked her for raising him on Lehonti’s hill ( in standards, commandments, etc…)

Old Testament has a story of a people that did not come down from the safety of the Hill.
Nehemiah 6:1

It isn’t sufficient to just stay on Lehonti’s hill. We need to be actively building the kingdom of God.

Alma 53 – Miracle of Stripling Warriors

Stripling Warriors were not like the ones portrayed in Friberg's paintings.
They were young. Helaman referred to them as his sons, my little sons, very little sons.
The "Sons" referred to Helaman as their "Father"

Compared Gordon B Hinckley to Helaman.
Hinckley loves the youth of the church.

Utah Statistics
100 kids who are baptized
76 Deacons
65 Teachers
58 Priests
33 Go on Missions

People who go “inactive” do so the most during the ages of 13 -25
If you are 25+ in the church you have a 90% chance of staying active for the rest of your life.

v.12
1) Assurances
2) Peace
3) Great Faith
4) Hope

v.13
Leads to Courage & Determination

He talked more about what make the 2000 Stripling Warriors so effective.
( I didn't get all of these notes, so I won't butcher them -- please send an email to david dot jarvi at gmail if you did get them)

WAR!

Alma 43 – Helaman (All War Chapters)
Wilcox emphasized he’s a moderate independent and whatever opinion he does have wouldn’t be revealed.

So WHY write so much about WAR?

-One of Wilcox’s theories is that Mormon admired Captain Moroni
(as evidenced by his own sons name)
-Mormon was a general from age 16, his profession was a soldier/general
-His whole life was spent in conflict/war
-Wilcox proposed that the BofMormon was “Abridged for our day”
not necessarily specifically written for our day by all of the various prophets throughout the book.

The BofMormon Explains
-How you should fight?
-How to feel about war?
-How to prepare for war? Etc..
-What is a justifiable war?
(emphasized that in one class ALL details couldn’t be covered, but the major ones)

WAR is the major issue in our current political environment
Wilcox said.. “If the scriptures aren’t relevant Why read them?”

6 Principles about war (I'm 90% sure I got these right, please correct if not)

Attitudes are critical
Have the right motives
Are you guilty of the 1rst or 2cnd offense
Righteousness/Faithfulness is Critical
God prospers based on circumstances
Choose Men of God to lead you.

1rst Principle -- Attitude of nations, government, soldier, citizen are important

Alma 43:6-7, 13-14
Strong Anger, Hate makes pawns out of soldiers, people. Gives power brokers leverage
Certain groups are trying to preserve hate (Adolf Hitler was superb at stirring up anger/hate)

Alma 48:11 didn’t delight in bloodshed, If I can control attitudes I can control conflict
Alma 48:12 (compelled reluctantly) You only go to war compelled/obliged
Alma 44
v.1 "I don’t want to"
v.2 no anger because of religion
v.23 "sorry to take up arms"

Two attitudes of people in Captain Moroni’s own country

1) Anti-Nephi Lehis – didn’t fight because of covenants, Captain Moroni defended them
2) Kingmen –Went to war against them, and killed them because they would not support

2nd Principle – Motives

Alma 54:24 -- The most worthless cause to go to war is to avenge wrongs

Title of Liberty given at least 24 times (reasons to go to war)
Alma 43
V9 defense of lands, wives, children ( NOT to preserve hatred)
V26
V30land liberty, church
V45
V47
V48
7th time Alma 44 v5

Rarely is an offensive war justified (Joshua was an example)

David O McKay -- April 1942 Conference Talk
1rst Conference after the Pearl Harbor Bombing
(I’m still looking for the article link online)

Gave 3 reasons not to go to war
3 justifications for a nation for war
3) In defense of a country ( Captain Moroni did this with the Anti Nephi Lehis)

3rd Principle – Are you guilty of the 1rst or 2cnd offense

1rst Offense is “I hit you”
2cnd Offence is “ I hit you again” OR I hit you back to retaliate
3rd Offense is "I hit you again" or I retaliate/preemptive attack

God says you deserve each other if you hit people back ( opposite of "Turn the other cheek"

D&C 98:16 Renounce War and Proclaim Peace
v.23 Bear Patiently
You are promised 100 fold for not fighting on 2ncd offense a
4 fold for not on 3rd offense

Vengeance is MINE! Says the Lord

Exception given in D&C 134 – “times of exigency”
No Diplomacy is possible.
No debate/conversation is allowed.

“If a person who has a trigger to your head, you don’t have to wit 3 times for him to shoot” – Wilcox

Sunni/Shiite conflict has been going for 1400 years
Resulted after the death of Muhammed about the rightful heir to run the kingdom.
Sunni’s thought it should go to friends and close associates of prophet
Shiite’s thought it should go to ALI (family)
(Very similar to what happened with Joseph Smith)

The Key is to not pass hatred on for sake of your generation and your ancestors

4th Principle –Faithfulness.Righteousness is Critical

Alma 61 v 14 Letter to Moroni
Two ways to Resist Evil
1) First with Words
2) Sword

I thought it interesting how close the words WORD and S-WORD are. (Alma 31 says that the preaching of the WORD had a more powerful effect than any other thing)_

Armaments are not critical, not always necessary
Righteousness, Unity ARE

Battle of Captain Moroni & Zarahemna

1rst battle
Captain Moroni – prepared for defense with armor
Lamanites came at them with numbers
v.9 didn’t believe it was God who protected nephites, but cunning, protection

2cnd Battle
Moroni prepared more ( by digging ditches, and fences)
Zarahemna came with armor this time
Alma 49:6

3rd Battle
Alma 51:11
Helaman 4:14 Morinhah attacked when his soldiers had repented
George Washington was aware of the power of righteous troops.
He admonished troops to be righteous (Profanity, Gaming, Gambling, not obeying Sunday)
Spencer Kimball Quote – 70’s quote on war (someone please comment where this reference was…)

5th Principle - God prospers based on circumstance
Alma 48 v.14, v.15

We need to look at danger, threat, attacker and determine proper response
Must know enemy and know the true threat
Know your enemy so you can apply the right tactic

1) Bury Weapons and let them slaughter you ( Ghandi and India independence came this way. Shared story of British soldiers shooting 1rst and 2cnd rows of marchers and then stopping. Ghandi said, We have won, we have changed their hearts.

His advice for Palestinian conflict would be this approach. Palestinians should burn all weapons in mass demonstration and then take to marching before Democratic country. Suicide bombers prove people are willing to die anyway.
This approach probably wouldn’t have worked with Hitler, Stalin
2) Let God Change you’re their hearts
3) Fight with everything you have (2000 stripling)
There are others like Distraction ( Porter Rockwell approach)

6th principle- Chose Men of God to lead you.
Alma 48:11 A Description of a good leader.

Need Holy Spirit to help you and leaders make good decisions.
You should always pray for leadership in White house regardless of how they got their.

Next week –
I think we’ll focus on the stripling warriors and Mormon will eventually show us faith can not only move mountains, but win wars. And that God needs only a few righteous people (2000 “very young”, “little sons”) to defeat evil (Lamanite armies) Seems like God always lets a miracle build up—to prove his points emphatically.

How-To Raise Righteous Children

Disclaimer
-I showed up 15 minutes late
-Wilcox had a ton of material that was a little scattered at times.
-Please add any notes that I missed, or correct any wrong things…and I’ll update the post

Alma the Younger Lessons on How to teach children

Alma 36:15
War,Contention,Hearts Wax Hard,Began to be offended ( very similar to our culture)
For parents in our culture, it feels like everything is working against us to raise children righteously.

4 Lessons on How to Teach Children

1) One on one parenting ( customized parenting to each children)
Earthly parent can exert more influence on child than heavenly parent.

2) Give Testimony ( Alma 36 is all testimony)
-Doesn’t need to be a perfect, BIG testimony but can be small if its real
-If it doesn’t stir them up, nothing probably will
-Help children feel and find testimony ( Stripling Warriors said Mothers “knew it” ( they didn’t say mothers taught it)

(Last weeks lesson on faith preceded this lesson for a reason. You have to have a testimony, experiences, etc.. before you can build one in the life of a child.)

Alma the Younger gives his testimony 1rst in Alma Chap 36
v.1 I swear
v.3 I do know
v. 4 I would not
v.5 By holy angel made known unto me
Story of Conversion ( they probably heard it before) gives a shortened version in chapter 38 as well
v.26 I do know, “of God”
v. 28 I know he will
v. 30 you ought to know

3) Teach by Example Whenever he uses a should, ought, etc.. he uses a “as I have done”
v.2 should do as I have done, in remembering the captivity of fathers
v. 3-4 beseech of thee that thou wilt ..., I would not that ye think I know of myself
v.29 ye also ought to retain in remembrance [captivity of fathers] as I have done
v.30 ye ought to know as I do know
Chap 37 v2.keep all these things sacred, event as I have kept them

When you are not a good example, use someone else

4) Teach them Love for Scriptures

Chapter 36

Joseph Smith and Lectures on Faith 2:33-34 ( mentions teaching)
-Parents should Arouse, excite, incite, search for, inquire,Stir up faith of children.

Alma Chapter 37 - Scriptures

4) Teach them Love for Scriptures -Parents should teach children how to read and pull truths out of scriptures

v. 8 ( 4 purposes of scripture)
1) Enlarge memory
2) Convince of error
3) Bring to knowledge
4) Bring salvation to souls

Other reasons ( I don’t know where Wilcox got them)
Bring people to knowledge of Incorrect traditions
Bring people to repentance
Bring people Cause to rejoice

Scriptures were not originally called “scriptures”
Moses 6 calls them a Book of Remembrance-or a book of stories God wants us to remember.
Scriptures give good examples, stories of heroes and great people ( unlike the world)

Examples of how scriptures are used in the scriptures
Iron Rod --- next to a path with rushing creek and a slippery bank
Manna –no spiritual nourishment in the world, how barren it is
Sword – World is a battle
Lamp – symbolizes the world
Liahona(v.37) the world is wilderness

Cicero -- “He who knows only his own generation always remains a child”
C.S. Lewis -- (didn’t provide a reference, and read the quote too fast, please leave a comment if you find the real quote)

“A scholar lives in many different places and ages and is immune to much of the garbage given over the pulpits.”

Shiblon – “The perfect child”
Advice for perfect children
1) Praise/Compliment
2) Let them know how much you love them

(Children don’t know the joy they are to parents)
3) Validate Spiritual Experiences in their life
(needs to feel comfortable sharing spiritual experiences with parent)
(parent needs to affirm and build on spiritual experiences)

Coriantum – “The problem child”

Chapters 36-38 were doctrinal—
-Coriantum used excuses of doctrinal misunderstandings
-Coriantum gave some heed to Fathers counsel, just not all of it.

Pattern for Correcting Truth (can be hard at times)
1) Show where child went wrong
2) Show consequences of behavior ( short term and long term)
3) Teach how to prevent from happening again
4) Show Scripture

Chapter 39 – Immoral, Sexual Sin

Bridle Passions – (Wilcox loves that advice like this wouldn’t have come from a 24 year old Joseph Smith-proving book is true)

World—teaches release of passion = LOVE
God—teaches the control of passion within bounds he has set = LOVE

-God – “Procreative Power is final glory of God”
-Reserved for highest level of Celestial Kingdom
-You can be a Father, if you can’t procreate

5 Gates to prevent sin, specifically sexual sin
(this was a bit confusing because he continued with more "Gates" after the 5” he mentioned)

1) Give Heed to my counsel
2) Don’t think you are strong enough or wise enough
3) Stuff
4) Don’t go to places (Land of Siren) where opportunity presents itself
Story of Caiaphas palace- (Jesus was taken to his palace after he was caught)
Peter said he would never deny jesus( he thought he was strong enough, but he went to the palace and denied Jesus)

5) No excuse
Men are not gas pedals and women brakes.
Men and Women carry equal responsibility in bridling passions.

More gates
v.9 Be Careful what you look at
Cross yourself ( build a blockade between you and sin)
As a parent, you can do what you can (computer in main room, filters, etc)

to limit children from sexual sin (pornography, worldlyinfluences,)
but they can get it if they want it.
v.10 take counsel from Older Brother
v.13 Turn to the Lord and LOOK ( completely)
v.13 No vain or foolish thing.—sometimes the pursuit of FUN or good times can be a trigger for sexual sin.
v.15 Hope.

2 types of people ( he wishes he could split the class into two groups)

1) People who have never had a problem with Sexual sin
Be Pure, Be Clean, Be Chaste, etc… and Don’t, DON”T DON”T!!! give in

2) People who have Sinned
Last thing he wants to do pour gasoline on fire of guilt
Virtue can be restored as though you had never lost it
No pink people in church ( Sins are Scarlet OR White as Snow)
Some people think you can be forgiven, but you are a slightly pink version of white.

Sexual sin is especially sinful because you need two people to both agree, both wills have to give in

Short Term Consequences
v.7, v.11

Long term Consequences
v.8 Will not be nice at Judgment day
v.9 No Kingdom of God

Counsel about being Single --Wilcox recorded a talk entitled, “How will I know?” (Deseret Book)

Wished 25-30 year olds shopped at ToyRUS rather than BEST BUY
bought baby food rather than pizza
in a home, rather than at his institute class/dances.

No legitimate reasons for being single past 26,27,28
Pointed to Apathy, Laziness & the Need for some to learn social skills
Its time to move on and be fathers/husbands so women can be mothers/wives.
Acknowledged frustration/anxiety exists on both sides(male/female)

His Advice
Get on Knees, pray and tell the Lord your ready and want to move on
Learn social skills, if you need to
Nobody is perfect, but he acknowledged we don’t need to settle either.

Court
Decide
Commit
Move Forward

(as one last inspiration for single people to get out of the rat race)

Shakespeare
Spuring the advances of a suitor, Rosalyn the heroine said
“Sell while you may, for you are not for all markets”

Wilcox expressed he was sorry if he offended anyone

Next week—we will Explore IRAQ and the things that make a WAR justifiable based on scriptures.

Alma 32–34 The Pyramid Fortress of Faith

Pyramid of Faith has three levels
1) Top level is “I Know
2) Middle level is Evidence “I know why…”
3) Bottom level is Experience, Reason, Authority, Common Sense

Pyramids are hard to knock over.
Alma 32 is about providing a way to broaden the bottom level.
Alma the Younger lived in an agricultural society. Trees were important to their survival.

In our day, the scientific method (empirical reason) is the standard for finding truth.

1) Start with a Hypothesis
a. state in positive terms (i.e. innocent until proven guilty, Jesus is Christ)
b. Alma 34:4,5 Is Jesus the Christ? is the great question
c. Define your assumptions
2) Experiment
a. Research, Observe, Gather Data, Testing
3) Develop Conclusions
4) Retry, Adjust/adapt hypothesis

You don’t stop experimenting. You keep trying to prove your hypothesis. The Goal is to get to a LAW.
Hypothesis >>>> Theory >>>>> LAW

Before you state a hypothesis you must define your assumptions.
4 ASSUMPTIONS necessary in for finding Spiritual Truth

Alma 32 ( Alma was preaching to rich people on a hill, when poor humble people approached)

1) Humility (v.6)
C.S. Lewis – A proud man will never find God. He must look up
v.13 Doesn’t matter how you become humble
2) God wants you to know the answer to your hypothesis ( v.22)
3) He will tell it to you and to ALL people (v.23)
4) You shouldn’t expect a perfect knowledge(v.26)
-you can’t expect to harvest while you are planting
-v.27 Noone is completely objective about everything. Skeptics or Non-Skeptics all have their biases

Wilcox doesn’t see the LDS church as black/white true/untrue (as many in church do) He mentioned he doesn’t know what a “shadow of a doubt is”. He admits he still doubts about things. Doubt is not bad, but what you do with it. Wishes people would share more testimonies emphasizing goodness. “I know there are good things in the church and that we are led be good men.” He said the emphasis in Alma (on Good) is different than emphasis in current church (on TRUE beyond a shadow of a doubt). He mentioned that he doesn’t feel the Mormon church has all truth, but that he found truth at its most mature level in the LDS church.

4 ways to draw your conclusions

1) Begins to Swell within you- physical, emotional, spiritual response to truth
- Motion- the movement of the spirit in you, things are moving in you
- Heat- a burning in the bosom
- Many other ways, Peace, Joy, enlightenment, calm
- The important thing is just to recognize one that works for you
2) Begins to Enlarge Soul – you have a Behavioral Response to goodness
- You start acting different, better
- Your ability to have compassion, empathy increases
- v.35 IS this not real
3) Begins to Enlighten understanding
- Your mind responds to truth
- Intellectual response ( it makes sense)
- The interest of your mind expands
4) Begins to be Delicious
- Doctrines (temple marriage, babies who die aren’t going to hell)
- You crave more

Swell, Enlarge,Enlighten,Delicious = S.E.E.D.

Some people respond more to feelings (enlarging) , than intellect (enlightening) and vice versa.

Ø Robert Frost Poem – Into My Own
Ø Thoreau's Poem - I know I am, I know I am his, of whom I am a kindred.
Ø Truth can never be confirmed enough, though doubts never sleep. Shakespeare

Alma 33 - Experimenting, Exercising your Faith

-Alma the younger & Amulek
-You don’t go to Olympics after 1 day of exercise
-v.7 closet means bedroom (Elizabethan-King James translation)

5 ways to Plant, Nourish, Experiment with SEEDs
in order because they each lead to the next

1) Pray anyplace, anytime ( v3 – v10 all about prayer)
2) Scriptures (v. 12)
3) Look (v.19)
-Two important figures can be found in scriptures ( Jesus and the Father)
-Look unto me in every thought
-Moses’s serpent on stick represented Christ’s victory over Satan.
serpent = temptations, and fiery, flying serpent bites
-i.e. leprosy represented spiritual sin and how Jesus could heal all of us
4) Learn ( v.23)
5) Listen to my words and Walk in the meekness of Spirit

Alma 34
v.15, 16, 17 all mention exercising Faith unto Repentance

4 Purposes of Life
1) Prepare to Meet God (v. 32)
2) Perform Labors (v.32)
3) Prepare for Eternal Life (v.33)
4) Improve our time while in this life (v.33)

It takes a while to grow a tree, so DON’T PROCRASTINATE (v.33)
The Best way to accomplish the 4 purposes of life is to plant the seeds God has given us (i.e. commandments) and then grow them into a healthy, vibrant orchard.
Wilcox wished that we would all treasure the seeds god has given us.
Eternal life is a potluck of the fruits of our trees
.

Tuesday, 7:00-8:30 Michael Wilcox Institute 25-30 Book of Mormon Class

4 Major Anti-Christs in the Book of Mormon
Wilcox felt the term Anti-Christ gives people an image of a very noticeable, godless type person. He stressed that an Anti-Christ is really anyone who is a “faith shaker”. Jacob 7:5 ( Sherem hoped to shake faith)

4 Anti-Christs in Book of Mormon are

Sherem - Jacob 7
Nahor - Alma 1
Korihor - Alma 30
Zoram - Alma 31

Alma the Younger interacts with Nahor, Korihor, AND Zoram. Alma the Younger is perfect to be the ANTI anti-Christ because he himself was one. He knew where they were coming from.

5 Ways to deal with Anti-Christs

1) Know their trademarks ( you can find them in church or outside of church)

Sherem Quotes Scripture, calls Jacob “Brother”, Religous
Nahor Wants clergy to be Popular and Paid
Korihor Non-Religious
Zoram Highly Religious

You can’t always know who the anti-Christ’s are. They can be religious, non religious.
I think of how the philosophies of men can mingle with scripture and true religion.

2) Know your doctrine

Sherem - Something else will saved
Nahor – Everyone will be saved
Korihor – Some will, Some won’t
Zoram – You don’t need to be saved

3) You don’t have to listen to them. You have a choice

Choice is not between two trees (as in the knowledge of the tree of good and evil and the tree of life) The choice really is between the tree of life and ALL other trees.

4) Sometimes the best defense is a good offense

He shared story of how philosophy professors like to pick on religious people. But at the end of the day –they can’t prove anything anymore than you can. Religious people back themselves into a corner, when we actually have a much stronger foundation (Alma 30:36-37)

5) Answer with testimony

Shared the concept of a testimony pyramid in which faith rests on
1) Faith “I Know it is true” based on feelings, emotions
2) Evidence “I know why I know”

Hebrews 11:1 ( Wilcox felt this was the best definition on faith)Greek translation of “Substance” is also foundation, assurance, evidence

Evidence is based on
Experience - personal experiences, testimony of “brethren” peers
Authority -- testimony of prophets
Reason -- Nature, etc...

Anti-Christs have a reverse pyramid (based on bad beliefs as their foundation, traditions, and then emotions) Anyone of any religion can get mixed up in a reverse pyramid

6 Articles of NO FAITH for Anti-Christs ( aka Faith Shakers) Alma 31

1) (v )Can’t know of anything to come
2) (v 15)Can’t know of anything you can’t see ( empirical)

4) (Whatsoever someone did was No Sin, No Crime (no law, chaos, free love,etc..)
5) No afterlife

Next week is Alma 32 –

He'll go into how Alma the Younger proves how we can find out about God through the scientific method. (Wilcox felt that this was really neat because it was like Alma the younger knew exactly that we would need this level of proof)
